Romans 3:1-2 -- What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God.
We're doin' it if we have boy, and we're doin' it on the eighth day. The only way to ensure that it gets done on the eighth day is to have a mohel do it. More than that, Hebrew custom ensures that it's performed properly. We could have a culturally cognizant pediatrician perform it, but 1) their office is not open on Sunday, sometimes Saturday and 2) does it say, "to the local physician was committed the oracles of God?"

Yeah, I've heard a bunch of horror stories where the hospital or doctor took a little too much off...those poor boys.

Our midwife had a mohel lined up in case Morgen was Octavian Augustus...and she also had a regular doctor option as well for folks who recognized the hygenic and health logic but not necessarily the biblical instruction.
Our midwives are pretty opposed to circumcision, so I had to do a lot of digging on my own. They have a physician who sees homebirth babies, and we'll likely use him as our PCP. But he does circumcisions only on Tuesdays. And, yes, many boys are, frankly, mutilated. It was awesome to unearth the mohel concept. I love that they do it right...
